Office Equipment, the WEEE Directive and Global Warming Issues Even photocopiers are now environmentally friendly

By Keith Palmer

The WEEE directive has nothing to do with pushing your kid on a swing. WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The WEEE directive became law in Europe on the 13th of February 2003 and was aimed at decreasing the problem of electrical and electronic equipment waste. This directive promotes the recycling and reuse of electronic and electrical equipment. Producers were made responsible for treating, recycling, or taking back the equipment.

Photocopiers are a major part of the WEEE directive, and waste reduction and energy saving in the workplace has been helped by the introduction of environmentally friendly photocopiers in these workplaces. These new machines play a big role in helping with the Global Warming issues facing us today. Under the WEEE directive these photocopiers can no longer be discarded to a local landfill.

Photocopiers are the most common item when it comes to office equipment. Since they are only used when needed and not a constantly used machine, in terms of paper use, energy, and consequentially greenhouse gas emissions, they can pose a significant price to pay to the environment.

With the new environmentally friendly photocopiers they now have features that can reduce the energy needed to support the machine by more than 60 percent. This is achieved by the use of an "energy saving" mode which will "power down" the photocopier when it is not being used. These new energy efficient copiers also feature what is called an "on demand" fusing system. Rather than a quick heating roller, a thin fixing film is used. Also, instead of a halogen heater, a ceramic heating element is used. This results in the new photocopiers having lower heat requirements and greater energy efficiency. In less than ten seconds the copier can go from sleep mode to fully operational, while this would take over one minute for a conventional machine.

With the increased availability of double sided copying and printing working hand in hand with the new developments in technology the photocopier will lead the way for energy efficient office equipment. The future of energy efficiency in the workplace has become a lot brighter, and these new photocopiers have become an important part of that future. - 30529
